North Shore of Lake Superior – Grand Marais, Minnesota

16-08-25 -107
When we arrived at Artists Point in Grand Marais, The Boss (Lake Superior) was no longer calm and placid.
16-08-25 -109
The big noisy waves were very interesting to watch.
16-08-25 -122
I enjoyed the cascades and waterfalls made with each wave that crashed on shore – such a pleasant rock outcropping added a lot of appeal.
16-08-25 -118
Fun to photograph! Trying to catch the wave as it breaks on the rocks.
16-08-25 -114
Can you feel the spray?
16-08-26 -125
We left the storm behind us as we headed to Superior National Forest and the Boundary Water Canoe Wilderness Area.
16-08-26 -126
A view from the top of Eagle Mountain looking over all that wilderness!
16-08-26 -127
This is the highest point in Minnesota at 2,206 feet above sea level. Lake Superior is about 600 feet above sea level for a reference point.
16-08-26-131
We returned to Artist Point after a very lovely community picnic at the Grand Marais library – a very nice town. A talented stone artist left these balanced pinnacles for all to enjoy.
16-08-26-132
It is wonderful to have the opportunity to experience the same beach in the calm after the storm with these great puddles full of reflections.
16-08-26-134
And the late afternoon sun added such a nice warm color to the detail.
16-08-26-130
Even the birds were enjoying themselves.
16-08-26-138
Fabulous sunset – it was difficult to know which direction to point the camera.
16-08-26-139
The harbor had its own beauty
16-08-26-140
But this captures it best – just being out and enjoying the colors and the beauty. I am so glad we have had this opportunity to spend time this summer with the Great Lakes!

North Shore of Lake Superior – Duluth to Tofte, Minnesota

16-08-21 -041
Sunday morning in Duluth to see the Tall Ships (see separate entry) and we visited with some friends of friends to get some ideas of what to see along the coast.
16-08-21 -044
A quick stop at Gooseberry Falls on our way to a night at Silver Bay.
16-08-21 -046
Gooseberry had this monument to the CCC workers – we appreciate their craftsmanship and all they did to build our great parks.
16-08-22 -051
Beaver River Falls as seen from Highway 61.
16-08-22 -053
We hiked up river for a closer look.
16-08-22 -055
Some nice little cascades as well.
16-08-22 -057
And some fun patterns made by the water.
16-08-22 -060
The rugged coast line of Lake Superior – Volcanic Basalt here not sandstone.
16-08-22 -065
Split Rock Light House in the distance.
16-08-22 -069
It was interesting to study it a while from this vantage point – and to people watch as many came down to the beach to look at it after their tour.
16-08-22 -074
Interesting proportions but it works very well.
16-08-22 -070
The other direction is just as beautiful.
16-08-22 -075
This is Black Beach in Silver Bay. Well worth the visit. They also have Pebble beach, Agate beach and Peach beach.
16-08-24 -092
And looking the other direction on Black beach.
16-08-24 -093
A detail shot of the Black beach and the peach granite. It looked like a fish to me – ha!
16-08-23 -077
Palisade Point cliff is full of rock climbers this morning.
16-08-23 -076
The view from there is breathtaking! There is a freighter pulling in for iron ore in Silver Bay.
16-08-23 -081
We hiked to High Falls in Tettegouche State Park.
16-08-23 -082
Oh – there is a third one around the corner – very loud!
16-08-23 -083
Interesting to hike to the top.
16-08-23 -084
And across this swinging foot bridge.
16-08-23 -087
Back on the coast admiring this view of Palisade Point.
16-08-23 -086
And looking the other direction where a friendly visitor took our picture.
16-08-23 -090
We enjoyed wine o’clock looking at this view – noting the 15% slant angle on all of the outcroppings
16-08-24 -095
Temperance River Falls – Look another falls and another walk through thick forests where you can’t see anything until you are right at the falls.
16-08-24 -099
Sugarloaf Interpretive Center was a large logging area and this ring is left over from that era of collecting all the logs on shore to be pulled across Lake Superior
16-08-24 -100
Tofte Town Park was a nice place to enjoy the water along with the seagulls.
16-08-24 -101
And to catch a nice sunset.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

16-08-04 -081
This is the second time we have traveled together to the UP so we have some different things to see.
16-08-04 -082
We found a little lake (Brevort) with a put in site to make our stop for the night
16-08-04 -083
Really peaceful sunset
16-08-05 -084
Lunch on Lake Michigan – does it look much different?
16-08-07 -090
Hugoboom Lake was our site for three nights. It is in Hiawatha National Forest. We swam in the lake, walked around the lake , chatted with fishermen and others that stopped by.
16-08-07 -091
The color of the lake at sunset was amazing – it go so still and reflective.
16-08-07 -087
Early morning mist was also very interesting.
16-08-07 -088
Chef is making pancakes…with fresh raspberries!
16-08-07 -089
Another peaceful evening
16-08-05 -085
These are the best photos and you know we took many more!
16-08-08 -092
We went up Christmas lighthouse for our first glimpse of lake Superior.
16-08-08 -097
We walked a local nature trail to find this fun waterfall.
16-08-08 -100
Miners Rock in Pictured Rock National Lake shore. The color is superb and the kayakers added a nice sense of scale.
16-08-08 -101
Beautiful day!
16-08-08 -103
In both directions!
16-08-08 -104
Another waterfall
16-08-08 -105
A really pretty sunset even though we were not on the water.
16-08-09 -106
Early morning on Lake Superior.
16-08-09 -107
We can’t believe how calm the water is.
16-08-09 -108
In Marquette along the shore, where we had a picnic lunch.
16-08-10 -112
Shaken, not Stirred: The name is Bond. Bond Falls.
16-08-10 -117
Bond Falls camp site on the reservoir created by the power company – really a nice spot to hang out. There was also a lot of firewood so we polished off a few s’mores!

Lake Michigan in the Lower Peninsula

16-07-29 -033
Manistee National Forest coastline
16-07-29 -034
Summer doesn’t get much better than this!
16-07-29 -040
Relaxing until sunset – well worth the wait!
16-07-31 -060
We found a quiet cool dispersed site in the woods – stayed for 4 nights. The solar panels struggled to keep the battery charged but we slept so well. Nice to have a break from the heat.
16-07-30 -044
Nordic Dunes Wilderness – we enjoyed a day hike along the shore.
16-07-30 -050
And hung out for another gorgeous sunset!
16-07-31 -057
Michigan Recreation Area beach.
16-07-31 -055
Dunes protect all the shoreline.
16-07-31 -061
Can’t get tired of this!
16-08-01 -062
Manistee Light House where we hung out for lunch  – along with many others.
16-08-01 -065
This is a nice looking sunset but looks like the sun won’t melt into the lake.
16-08-01 -067
Ohhh – looks like we might have some delayed color…
16-08-01 -068
This is an “end of the world” sky! Unbelievable!
16-08-02 -069
A viewpoint of the coast – an easy hike just up some stairs!
16-08-02 -070
Another lighthouse.
16-08-03 -074
Do I look like I am captain of the ship? My grandfather was a cook on the freighters….not sure I could get used to that lifestyle.
16-08-03 -075
A life saving demonstration where Raggedy Ann got saved first while Andy clung on a bit longer.
16-08-03 -076
All the helpers pulled them to shore – good fun.
16-08-03 -077
Another sunset at Sleeping Bear Sand Dune area – our final on Lake Michigan. People had bonfires on the beach and I remember doing that as a kid. I would be cold and dripping wet from swimming while roasting a hot dog. We also did the dune climb every summer – before it was a National Lake Shore
16-08-04 -079
Lunch at the Mighty Mac bridge watching the Edmund Fitzgerald go underneath.

Sneffels Wilderness / Uncompaghre National Forest

16-07-12 -258
Wilamot Valley has views to dream about. Wow! We strolled to this beaver pond in the early morning.
16-07-09 -225
The Travato found a great parking place! We stayed put for three nights.
16-07-11 -253
We watched photographers come and take pictures of us…well probably, unlike us, they cropped out the Travato.
16-07-09 -226
We could enjoy some river time…tho the mosquitos kindav liked this spot as well.
16-07-11 -254
One night some horses were brought in and added a beautiful touch to the valley.
16-07-11 -257
They were more interested in the grass than the view.
16-07-10 -232
The start of the hike to Blue Lake. This is a hugely popular trail and we were really glad to have walked the mile to the trailhead rather than try to park.
16-07-10 -233
A couple backpackers asked for their photo here so they reciprocated by taking this one of us.
16-07-10 -234
A panarama view. Amazing colors. It did not feel real.
16-07-10 -240
We decided to take a cue from the marmot and just sun ourselves on a rock
16-07-10 -238
Life is good!
16-07-10 -236
Especially with views like this. True Prisma colors.
16-07-10 -241
More columbines in bloom, along the banks of the crystal clear water.
16-07-11 -252
The second day we hiked to Baine Basin which is the next valley over.
16-07-11 -251
There were many river crossings but all were nicely fashioned with sturdy bridges.
16-07-11 -245
Our first view of the valley – there were so many waterfalls!
16-07-10 -242
We hung out on a rock with this view – a bit closer to the water.
16-07-11 -248
Colorful wildflowers. We loved this magenta variety of Paint Brush.
16-07-10 -243
Another evening stroll in the valley before turning in. I think we need to come back in the fall and see this valley with the aspens. It is a new favorite spot…we are collecting them.

Uncompaghre National Forest

16-07-07 -208
After exploring Cedar Edge and Montrose, CO, we found a parking spot with a view of the valley for two nights.
16-07-08 -217
We enjoyed a day hike exploring the area. There were 4-wheel drive roads that were the most rugged classification – not at all suitable for the Travato – or probably any vehicle that you wanted to keep!
16-07-07 -210
Sunset on the first night.
16-07-08 -220
The second sunset was equally beautiful.
16-07-09 -222
Outside of Ridgway, CO we hiked around this beautiful sculpture at the Dennis Weaver Park.
16-07-09 -221
It has a 20-foot wing span and was commissioned as a memorial on the park land set aside that connects Ridgway with the State Park
16-07-09 -224
We are seizing the moment and soaring with our Travato.

Delta and Gunnison Fork Recreation area

16-07-04 -188
Confluence of the Gunniison and Uncompahgre Rivers converge at the park in Delta – we spent the 4th relaxing here. We had fried chicken and ice cream for our picnic celebration.
16-07-04 -189
We were not the only ones spending the day in the park. This pleasant fishing pond/ lake was full of anticipation.
16-07-04 -192
We enjoyed a very peaceful sunset with a second bowl of ice cream!
16-07-04 -190
Some came prepared for the pre firework show. The firework show was really worth the wait. We especially enjoyed the reflections on the lake and the crowd’s appreciation.
16-07-05 -200
We drove the next day to the other side of the valley up the Gunnison River.
16-07-06 -204
Cool Rock hike up a dry wash in a canyon was a bit warm but a large variety of rock.- so many different cool rocks.
16-07-05 -202
We parked here for two nights – it was a bit exposed and windy but had great views.
16-07-06 -206
Great mountain views!
16-07-06 -207
Amazing sunsets and twinkling stars. We could also pull in some TV reception so enjoyed a show on the monitor. We have not played with all of the features yet so like the opportunity to figure things out.
